Ever since I could remember I dreamed of having a dog. Growing up, I gleefully played with a friend’s dog wishing that I had one of my own waiting for me when I returned home. My family had ducklings and fish during my childhood, but it never ended well. I knew that once I was settled in my own home, I would get a dog.
Marya and I have been debating for the last month whether to get a puppy from a breeder or adopt from a shelter instead. I wanted to get the right breed for herding our future flock of sheep, and we had to ensure our dog was perfect for the job. She insisted that there are plenty of abandoned dogs in need of a home that would do just as well. We looked online and found quite a few puppies of the breeds we were looking for waiting to be adopted.
One little puppy stuck out: Lucy. She is a 3 1/2 month old Australian Shepherd and Red Heeler mix. We drove down to Topsham and met with her foster family. An hour later we were heading home with Lucy in the backseat!
I can’t wait to see how she grows up on our farm.
